"Chicken and Waffles" for MLK Day - Was it Wrong?

Okay, so now some people have their knickers in a twist because the catering/cafeteria staff at the University of California at Irvine decided to serve "Chicken and Waffles" in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

I don't know about you but I like chicken and waffles. I think we are just becoming overly sensitive about everything. Seems you can't win for losing. Okay, so maybe that could be considered playing into a stereotype but it's not like they served watermelon and wore "mammy" outfits. Would Jewish people be outraged if they served latkes for Hannukkah?

Is this really something to get upset about or do we need to pick our battles more thoughtfully. On the one hand, we as a people, want to be recognized for our contributions, but on the other hand, somebody thinks they have a cute "theme" for a holiday and suddenly they're a racist.

I say, "pass the syrup."

I say pass the wing over here to me!!! I am certain somebody thought this was a cute, sensitive and creative way to recognize MLK Day on a university campus in a thoughtful way! Geezzzzzzzz, people let's keep it real. Now, you know most of us are outraged when we can't find frozen blackeyed peas for New Year's Day in the local Safeway Store. Let's recognize racism and racist motives, but let's celebrate recognition and creativity. Now, I know what my new MLK Day menu will be - Chicken and Waffles!

p.s.
I don't like syrup, so, I'm serving melted butter w/a dash of hot sauce on the side.
